If there’s one word he’d use to describe the state of his city, Mayor Cabaldon would say “progress.” He’s touting it at several key projects, like major developments downtown and along the waterfront near Raley Field. And he’s hoping to win federal funds for an ambitious streetcar proposal that would connect his downtown with Sacramento’s, across the Tower Bridge.
But then there’s the budget. Last year, Cabaldon says:
Cabaldon: “We were able to avoid making any layoffs or major service closures that would’ve been visible to the public. But this year, we’re going to have to do that. We’re gonna have to rebalance what we do as a city and the size of city government on a permanent basis.”
Cabaldon says that means layoffs instead of furloughs, cutting back on some city services and eliminating others entirely. City council budget hearings get under way next week.
