“Eliminating smoking on the beaches is good for health. Eliminating the potential for having the littering problems on the beaches, these are good measures; these are important measures to make sure we have a healthy and safe community.”
Lawmakers took the bill up last week, but it did not pass. Several Democrats were not there. Many GOP lawmakers, like Assemblyman Kevin Jeffries, oppose the bill as another example of lawmakers telling people how to live their lives:
"The bill hasn’t changed from the nanny state bill that it was last week. It was a nanny state bill then. It is a nanny state bill now.”
The bill was written by Democratic Senator Jenny Oropeza, who also wrote the law that now bans smoking in cars with kids.
