Unpaid days off for thousands of state workers would come to an end under a bill that gets its first hearing at the Capitol this week.

Senate Democratic leader Darrell Steinberg says his bill would end so-called “Furlough Fridays” for
tens-of-thousands of state workers required to take three days off a month without pay.

Steinberg says the employees are needed to work a full schedule to collect taxes and fees that feed revenues to the state’s general fund.
He says state Franchise Tax Board furloughs cost the state 300-million dollars a year.
Steinberg also wants to stop furloughs for Department of Motor Vehicle personnel. Last year,
Governor Schwarzenegger ordered the furloughs for nearly 200-thousand state workers as a cost-cutting move over 18-months.
Steinberg’s bill will be heard this week in a Senate committee.
It’s part of the Democrat’s job creation legislation. Republicans and the governor have introduced their own jobs bills.
