Judge Blocks Early Release of Sac County Inmates

The change comes in response to a ruling Wednesday from a Sacramento County judge. The judge temporarily blocked the sheriff from releasing jail inmates early under a state law that took effect last month.

The Sacramento County Deputy Sheriffs' Association filed a lawsuit last week to stop the releases.  The suit came after a county inmate with a violent record was arrested for attempted rape hours after he was freed.

On Wednesday, the judge said the state's early release law was only intended for inmates in state prisons, not county jails.  The law is meant to reduce prison overcrowding by freeing certain inmates before they have served their full sentences.

The temporary restraining order will be in effect until a hearing early next month.
