Last year’s opening stage was a prologue, where cyclists raced a short, two-and-a-half mile circle through downtown.  This year, it’s a 104-mile road stage that starts in Nevada City, winds mostly downhill through the Sierra foothills in Nevada, Placer and El Dorado Counties and ends with three loops around the Capitol.  It also has plenty of landmarks, like this one in Auburn featured in the Tour’s online video:

Video: “This is the Forest Hill Bridge, the tallest bridge in California. Don’t look down!”

And speaking of landmarks, the route even passes the Capital Public Radio studios too!

Sacramento tourism officials are planning several days’ worth of events leading up to Stage One.  And Bruce Cosgrove with the Auburn Chamber of Commerce says he’s thrilled the nationally-televised race will pass through his city for the first time.

Cosgrove: “It meanders through our community in two different directions. So we’re really excited about the potential of getting a lot of people out on the streets that day for that race.”

And then there’s the next day’s 110-mile Stage Two.  It’ll start in Davis and head through Winters on its way past Lake Berryessa over the mountains to Santa Rosa.
