Tahoe ski resorts call this time of year the “January thaw” – not in temperatures, but in business. But this year, at least, no one seems to mind too much.
Chapman: “We had a great start to the season.”
Andy Chapman is with the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association. And while it’s too soon to crunch all the numbers, he says some of North Tahoe’s larger properties saw revenue jumps of up to 20 percent over last year.
Chapman: “We’re hearing reports from some of the resorts and properties that have had one of their best holidays and best Decembers in quite some time.”
On the lake’s southern shore, Carol Chaplin with the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority says she’s hearing about a more modest boost – maybe five or 10 percent – but a boost nonetheless.
Chaplin: “Where some people might’ve been planning holidays to farther destinations in the past, they are looking for something that they can drive to.”
That’s why both officials say they’re aiming their marketing efforts at Northern Californians – especially the Bay Area and Sacramento.
