News Director, Clarion Awards

Honors for Documentary Series The View From Here and State Government Reporting

Sacramento, Calif. – July 20, 2015:  Capital Public Radio’s multi-media documentary series, The View From Here was honored with two awards from PRNDI, the Public Radio News Director’s Incorporated. The 2014 episode, Who Cares, won Second Place in the Large Newsroom Long Documentary category. Who Cares explored the stresses of caregiving through the stories of three families from the Sacramento area.  A three-part series featuring those families, which aired on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered last July, won First Place for Best Nationally Edited Series.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by our peers. These awards are testament to the hard work of our entire newsroom,” said Chief Content Officer Joe Barr at this year's PRNDI Conference in Salt Lake City.

“Our community-centered approach to storytelling is what makes our program stand out, especially in a year when PRNDI acknowledged there was “fierce competition” between public radio newsrooms across the country," says Catherine Stifter, Senior Editor for Innovation for the station. The PRNDI awards are in addition to an Edward R. Murrow News Documentary Award for another 2014 episode, The View From Here: Hidden Hunger.

The Capital Public Radio newsroom was also honored with a 2015 Clarion Award for State Government Reporter Katie Orr’s “Up Against the Ceiling: The Push for More Women in California Politics.”

Capital Public Radio News has garnered several awards this year for its documentary programs, environmental, feature and sports reporting, as well as continuing coverage of the Sacramento region. A full list can be found at capradio.org/awards.
