We are hiring for the position of Food and Sustainability Reporter. Essential Traits

As the Food and Sustainability Reporter you examine the impact of food and agriculture in our region and report on food as it relates to the environment, health, culture, policy and the changing demographics of California. You have an eye for anthropology as well as economics; identifying innovation, trends, and connecting what is happening in this region to the rest of California and the world.  


Working with CapRadio’s Environment and Health Care beats, you explore the nexus of food, the environment and health. You are knowledgeable in creating digital content and utilizing social media effectively. You are factual, yet fun when appropriate in a beat that is wide open for creative opportunity.


Primary Duties

As the Food and Sustainability Reporter you will produce daily stories and features. In addition, you will contribute long form documentary pieces as needed for The View From Here. You will maintain your expertise on food and sustainability issues and policy in California and nationwide as well as a database of sources, and create content for digital platforms, including social media sites. You will appear as a guest on CapRadio shows and documentaries and regularly contribute to the segment ideas of CapRadio shows. You will also fill spots and feature stories with NPR and other national outlets.



  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or in a related field, or equivalent work experience for at least 7 years
  • Advanced reporting - must be able to produce material of NPR style and quality
  • Advanced writing - understands important role sound plays in stories
  • Demonstrated ability to distill complex subject matters
  • Proficient in use of audio editing software, such as Adobe Audition or Pro Tools
  • Public Radio experience preferred
  • Position is based in Sacramento, but travel will be required
