David Watts Barton
David Watts Barton has 30 years of multimedia journalism experience in the Sacramento area, working with The Sacramento Bee, The Sacramento Press and local magazines and radio.
He has been a regular substitute host of Capital Public Radio's daily hour long live interview show, "Insight," since 2008.
Most recently, Barton was the first Editor-in-Chief of the hyper-local news website SacramentoPress.com, leading the nation in this new form of online local journalism.
Prior to that, Barton's writing appeared in The Sacramento Bee from 1982-2007. He was the paper's first Pop Music Critic and he was a senior writer for nearly 25 years. During that time, Barton's work also appeared in The Miami Herald, The Orange County Register, The Portland Oregonian, The San Francisco Examiner, the International Herald Tribune and many other papers.
He is currently writing guest Op-Ed columns for the Bee's editorial pages.
Barton has also written for Sacramento and Sactown magazines, and his work has appeared in the Columbia Journalism Review. He is a legal correspondent for the international business wire service, Bloomberg LLC.
He won the first Arts Journalist of the Year Award from the Arts and Business Council of Sacramento in October 2011. He has twice been nominated for a VIBE Award (Visionaries In Building Excellence), given each year by the Downtown Sacramento Partnership.
Barton will be teaching a class at the Sacramento Central Library in winter 2012, and is writing "Social Media Journalism for Dummies," to be published by Wiley in 2012.
