How Beethoven recycled the "Eroica" theme in four works as he worked to develop his signature style.
They're called the "Eroica Variations," because Beethoven uses the same melody heard in the finale of his third Symphony, the "Eroica."
But in fact, the piano variations were written two years before the Symphony. And two years before the variations, he had used the same theme in two other works.
