A special extra spooky pre-Holloween operatic double-bill!!
Tune in for a special extra spooky pre-Holloween operatic double-bill!!
The Flying Dutchman (Der fliegende Holländer) is an
opera, with music and libretto by Richard Wagner. Wagner claimed in
his 1870 autobiography Mein Leben that he had been inspired to
write The Flying Dutchman following a stormy sea crossing he made
from Riga to London in July and August 1839. The central theme is
redemption through love. Wagner conducted the premiere at the
Semper Oper in Dresden in 1843. This work shows early attempts at
operatic styles that would characterise his later music dramas. In
Der fliegende Holländer Wagner uses a number of leitmotifs
(literally, "leading motifs") associated with the characters and
themes. The leitmotifs are all introduced in the overture, which
begins with a well-known ocean or storm motif before moving into
the Dutchman and Senta motifs. This live 1985 recording
stars Simon Estes. Woldemar Nelsson conducts.

Bluebeard's Castle is a one-act opera by Hungarian
composer Béla Bartók. The libretto was written by Béla Balázs, a
poet and friend of the composer. It is in Hungarian, based on the
French fairy tale "Bluebeard" by Charles Perrault. The opera lasts
only a little over an hour and there are only two singing
characters onstage: Bluebeard
(Kékszakállú), and his new wife Judith
(Judit); the two have just eloped and
Judith is coming home to Bluebeard's castle for the first time with
a great spooky ending just in time for Holloween. This 1965
recording stars Walter Berry and Christa Ludwig. István Kertész
conducts.
