Sacramento Music Festival: New Groups, Lower Prices
Friday, March 15, 2013
The festival continues its efforts to increase attendance by lowering ticket prices and offering a more diverse array of performers. Los Lobos, Ben Taylor, and the Blasters will headline this year's festival -formerly known as the Old Sacramento Dixieland Jazz Jubilee.
Mike Testa with the Sacramento Convention Visitors Bureau says the festival is slowly rebuilding its customer base after a down economy, "Fifteen years ago, attendance on this event was over 100,000 people. They had venues across Sacramento and hotels filled everywhere. They've seen that change over the last few years. Attendance is about 60,000 people -which is a good problem to have. That's a great base to start from. But our goal is really to bring in some different acts, bring in a new crowd and build this event up to what it was years ago."
Testa says about half of the eighty performing acts this year are jazz bands.
There will be two dozen venues in Old Sacramento including a new main stage south of the Railroad Museum and a "next generation" site for youth jazz bands. The event takes place Memorial Day Weekend.
