Listen Now:
More than 100 leaders from the food and agriculture sectors were introduced to the philosophy of a new Sacramento Region Food Charter.

The charter addresses the importance of a healthy, sustainable and local food system in the six-county Capital region. Bill Mueller is the CEO of Valley Vision, which calls itself a non-partisan "action tank." It's backing the charter project. Mueller says only 2 percent of local food is eaten locally, and that's worth about $2 billion dollars.

MUELLER: "Our hope is to grow that 2 billion into 3 billion or 4 billion."

Under the charter, groups ranging from growers, nonprofit organizations and local governments and school districts will begin to emphasize more recycling, food security, and home gardens. Goals include access to safe, local food and a region free from hunger.
