Superintendent Robert Leri says it's been a rough few years for the Tahoe-Truckee school district.

LERI: "Tahoe Truckee's experienced mass layoff notices to teachers, potential layoffs and the disruption to the school and to the kids and the whole community was just very impactful on the kids learning.  And so we really want to avoid that at all costs."

Now he says, they'll avoid it because voters approved Governor Jerry Brown's November tax initiative.

The district will still have to plan for cuts - about a half million dollars a year.  But Leri says most of those cuts can be achieved through retirements and looking for efficiencies in programs.  Not only that, property tax projections in Tahoe Truckee may mean no cuts would be necessary at all.  But Leri's not banking on it just yet.
