Stern's Comments Bring Same Response From Two Competing Cities
Friday, February 15, 2013
On one hand, Stern said "I have a sense the first refusal right will be accommodated." The statement is in reference to a potential legal action challenging the right of the Sacramento Kings majority owners to sell without giving the minority owners an opportunity to match.
But, on the other hand, he says he doesn't forsee any legal trouble with a Seattle group's proposal to move the Kings to Seattle.
Media from both cities took that to mean Stern was leaning towards their city's interests.
Chris Danels of KING 5 TV in Seattle broadcast the comments after saying that Stern had given Seattle "a nod."
Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson arrived in Houston this morning. He has promised to lobby every NBA owner to support a Sacramento effort to keep the Kings where they are. He has no scheduled meetings with the commissioner.
The Sacramento City Council will vote on a resolution Tuesday supporting the effort to keep the Kings. Other regional councils and boards of supervisors have already voted or have votes scheduled on similar resolutions.
