Lake Tahoe could be the future site of the Winter X Games – the extreme sporting event that includes snowboarding and freestyle snowmobiling.

ESPN owns the X Games franchise and today the sports network announced that Lake Tahoe is on the list of possible locations for the games that start in 2015.

"It's great news. We're very excited to be considered one of the areas and we'll be working on the bid for the next three or four months."

Carol Chaplin heads the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority - one of the groups working to bring the games to the lake.

Aspen has hosted the event for the past 11 years and officials there say the games generate up to $10 million in economic benefits.

"It has residual too. Not only during the games but obviously one of the benefits of hosting is the media exposure and what people think about your destination afterwards. So it helps us establish ourselves as a world class winter resort."

Park City, Utah and Quebec City, Canada are among the other locations vying for the games.

Finalists will be determined by April and host cities will be announced by the end of this year.
