UPDATE 2:37p.m. January 16, 2013 Investigators say the suspect fought with Officer Kevin Tonn before shooting him. The suspect then is believed to have shot himself.

Jason Ramos with the Sacramento County Sheriffs Department says Officer Tonn, 35,  spotted someone who generally resembled the description of a burglary suspect a block away from the call.  Ramos says the Tonn approached the man and the two men began to struggle violently, "The officer got on his radio called for emergency cover. Two minutes later a secondary officer got on scene, broadcast shots fired and officer down. What it looks like is during this confrontation, this guy drew a handgun fired at the officer striking him. The officer went to the hospital and did not survive his injury. "

Ramos says the suspect was found a short distance away with what appears to be a fatal, self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Investigators say the person who was the subject of the call to police was later identified as a relative of the person living at the address and was not committing a crime.
