Sacramento’s Front Street Animal Shelter says a program to help needy pet owners feed their animals over the holidays is working.
By taking donations and then giving them to needy families,
Sacramento's Front Street Shelter is keeping 100-to-150 animals per
month out of the shelter. That's according to Gina Knepp. She
runs the shelter and Titanic's Pantry for the pets of low-income
families, "The whole project started in 2009 because of the
downturn in the economy and a huge increase in people surrendering
their pets."
Knepp says more animals are surrendered at the holidays, "It's typically a difficult time for everybody. You want to buy food and gifts for your children and the family pet is competing for those dollars."
The pantry is accepting holiday donations of pet food, including open bags of food. Opened cans won't be accepted.
Titanic's pantry is named after a former shelter resident -a 30-pound house cat- who has since been adopted.
The Front Street Shelter gives away about six tons of pet food a month.
