According to a resolution before the City Council, only one-third of the playground burned down in a suspected arson fire this July.  

There were two community meetings that followed the fire.  Based on those discussions, the Parks and Recreation Department says the City should go ahead and replace all of the wooden play structures in the park and add security lighting and a fire sprinkler system as well.  The plan also calls for more trees and recycled materials to be included.

The city estimates the cost at a little more than $686,000.  About half of that would come from the City's Risk Management Fund.  The rest would come from half-a-dozen community, lighting district, and sports court rehabilitation funds.

Community fundraisers have contributed about $100,000.  If the council approves funding for the project, the playground could be rebuilt by the end of next year.
