Federal Shutdown Shuts Down National Forest and Fall Festival

The federal government shut down is affecting some operations within National Forests. The offices at Plumas National Forest are closed and an annual festival has been cancelled.

Leigh Anne Schramel with the U.S. Forest Service is with the forest service communications staff.  She is one of the employees who are being furloughed while the United States Congress debates funding for the government.

"Most employees have been furloughed," she says.  "This does not affect fire fighters, law enforcement, personnel involved with the emergency salvage operations, district rangers and the deputy and forest supervisors."

Campers and wood-cutters with permits may still proceed with their plans. No new permits will be issued and gated campgrounds are closed.

The annual Fall Fest celebration on Mount Hough was scheduled for this coming Saturday but has been cancelled.

The event was to celebrate its tenth year of outdoor activities including music, crafts, and mountain biking.
