Davis To Consider Strict Plastic Bag Ban

So far, 80 communities throughout California ban plastic bags. Davis would be one of the first in the Central Valley to adopt a policy.

Mark Murray is with Californians Against Waste, an environmental group that opposes plastic bags. He says the Davis proposal would affect a lot more businesses than laws in other cities.

"A lot of the ordinances adopted so far have exempted the small stores and restaurants and Davis is actually looking at including fast food establishments and convenience stores in their policy."

The plastic bag industry says banning its product will cost the state jobs and cost consumers more in paper bag fees at the checkout counter.

The Davis City Council isn't expected to make a final decision until later this year or early next year.

Meanwhile, the City of Sacramento is also looking at banning plastic bags and is still in the process of reviewing the environmental impacts.
