Jazz Review: Kenny Garrett: Pushing New Boundaries

Kenny Garrett is arguably the most progressive-minded and technically proficient of today’s modern saxophonists. The plaintive cry of Kenny’s alto has graced many CDs, including his Grammy-winning work with Chick Corea.

Versatility is the hallmark of Garrett’s new Mack Avenue CD, Pushing The World Away. Garrett intentionally divorced himself from outward distractions and went into his inner universe in search of compositions that are both spiritually uplifting and deeply grounded in the jazz tradition.

Kenny’s alto soars on his Calypso-inspired salute to Sonny Rollins entitled “J’ovuert.” Other standout tracks include “Chuco’s Mambo” and “Hamma San.” Kenny also transforms Burt Bacharach’s “I Say A Little Prayer” into a slow tempo cha cha on which he varies the tempo throughout the song. On “Brother Brown,” Kenny trades in his alto for a keyboard and his piano trio is complemented by strings.

Listen for Kenny Garrett’s Pushing the World Away, now in heavy rotation on Capradio Music’s Excellence In Jazz and JazzStream.org.
