In most California cities, Safe and Sane fireworks echo into the night and light up the sky from June 28th through the 4th of July. But the Lodi City Council has voted to limit the setting off of legal fireworks only on the Fourth of July to make it easier for police to target illegal use outside of the allotted time.
Dennis Revell, who represents TNT Fireworks, says restricting legal fireworks to one day won’t solve the problem.
“They neither have the manpower nor the focus to really enforce this provision - which several council members said, 'If it’s not going to make a difference, why do it?' But they went ahead and did it anyway.”
Councilmember Joanne Mounce disagrees.
“This is going to give an opportunity to go after those who are not abiding by the law and we’re going to enact a drone policy to kind of go after some of those illegal fireworks,” Mounce says.
The ordinance still needs to come before the council a second time before it is enacted.
