In with the new and out with the old is the course the City of Modesto is taking with billboards. The city is looking at replacing old billboards with digital ones.
Modesto has banned billboards for decades but 42 are still in place, built before the ban took effect.
The city planning commission has approved a change in city regulations to allow for digital billboards along the Highway 99 corridor.
Cindy Birdsill is Modesto’s Community and Economic Development Director.
She says putting up a digital billboard would require replacing four old billboards, which are often peeling and rusting eyesores.
“The digital billboards are contemporary technology,“ says Birdsill. “The message can change and they’re generally built in a pleasing design.”
Birdsill says the aim is city beautification.
She adds there is also a requirement that the billboards carry a short eight-second ad for the city to promote activities or messages.
