It's still not clear when construction of Elk Grove's outlet mall will be finished. But a leasing plan posted online suggests more than 20 businesses have committed to joining the center. The new additions include: Nike, Victoria's Secret, Columbia Sportswear and Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse. The Sacramento Business Journal's Digital Editor Sonya Sorich says there's still the ongoing issue of a planned casino at the project site.
"This week the Elk Grove City Council repealed a land use decision regarding the casino," says Sorich. "That means there won't be a special election on the matter. But we don't know if this decision could do anything to halt the progress of the casino at the site."
The leasing plan confirms tenants reported in the past, including: Forever 21, Express, H & M, and a movie theater.
Downtown Davis is losing its Whole Foods Market. The grocery chain made the announcement this week. Sorich says it's not the only site the company is closing.
"Whole Foods said it will close nine stores," says Sorich. "Analysts say the grocer has faced challenges such as weak sales and declines in store traffic. That could be because more lower-priced grocers are dabbling in more natural and organic offerings and offering them at lower prices as well."
The Austin, Texas-based company still has three other stores in the Sacramento area. Last year, Whole Foods abandoned plans for a site in midtown. The Davis store opened in 2012. It's scheduled to close on Sunday, February 12th. Whole Foods says quarterly sales fell 2.4 percent at established locations, marking the sixth straight quarter of declines as it faces competitive pressures.
A chain of pizza restaurants out of Newport Beach is expanding in the Sacramento area. Sorich says Zpizza plans to open four new locations that will each feature "self-pour" walls with 30 taps. Patrons get wristbands and pour their own beer.
"This is of course an effort to get customers to linger in the restaurant in the evenings as opposed to always opting for those to-go orders," says Sorich. "And of course this is also a way for Zpizza to separate itself in a very crowded market."
The new sites will be in Fair Oaks, Folsom, Elk Grove and Roseville. The company has a relatively new taproom near Sacramento State...but has closed Sacramento area locations in the past.
