Since tennis legend Andre Agassi retired, he's focused his attention on building charter schools across the country. He now wants to establish a new school in Modesto.
The Sportsmen of Stanislaus or SOS Club could be the next site of the Turner-Agassi Charter School Fund.
The club has 55,000 square feet with tennis courts, basketball courts, and other facilities, but membership has plunged from a high of 2,500 30 years ago to 500 today.
Club President Wayne Zipser says the offer from Agassi to take over the property for a school makes sense.
“We felt that it was important that if this is continued with this tradition of supporting the community that a charter school would be a perfect fit," says Zipser.
He also says the SOS Club will continue to operate at least through August.
“We may have some opportunity to relocate to a smaller facility and so we’re looking at all those options,” says Zipser.
Agassi’s charter school fund has already built 50 charter schools in the U.S.
