Kari Cobb is a park ranger at Yosemite National Park
. She says the Rim Fire is burning about 10 miles away from the Hetch Hetchy Valley which lies along Yosemite’s northwestern border.
“The entire park is open, all the trails are open, all the camping is open and so far that fire is outside of Yosemite National Park’s boundaries.”
However, the fire has closed Highway 120 which is the main entrance for people coming from Sacramento. The alternate route is to take Highway 99 to Highway 140 through Merced and Mariposa.
Cobb says the fire hasn’t created much smoke in the Yosemite Valley and the park is still planning to observe the 97th birthday of the National Park Service this weekend.
“So to help celebrate Founder’s Day the entrances into the park will be free on Sunday, August 25th.”
Cobb points out rangers can’t predict fire behavior. But she says at this point it appears the blaze will remain outside of the park’s boundaries.
