University of the Pacific officials broke ground Monday on a $1.5 million athletic performance center. The center will give student athletes a step up to compete in the West Coast Conference.
A crowd applauds as several shovels dig into the ground on the site of the Janssen-Lagorio Performance Center. The 2,800 square foot facility will house weight training equipment for both men and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball.
Men’s basketball captain TJ Wallace says having their own weight room will make it easier to find time to train.
“Have student athletes set aside time for study because they already got their workouts out of the way and they’re able to be really productive during the day.”
Pacific Athletic Director Ted Leland says it will help to build a winning team.
“It will also help us in recruiting, athletes want to have, just like you were recruiting a biology professor, they want to know how nice are the labs, well, athletes want to know how nice your weight training facility and this will be state of the art.”
The facility is expected to open in six months.
