Under a new program in Stockton, people have more access to healthy food in convenience stores and small markets.
The program has had success in its first 6 months.
San Joaquin County Public Health Services is working with seven small neighborhood markets to put fresh produce on shelves and healthier choices at the check stand.
The new Refresh San Joaquin program has targeted neighborhoods in east and south Stockton where people depend upon small stores for most of their groceries.
Daniel Kim is with the County.
He says the program is designed to supply stores with fresh produce grown by local farmers.
“Being able to get some of the produce in season locally and to be able to have it at these stores really is a benefit not only to the customers but also to the farmers to be able to put their products in a local market,” says Kim.
Kim also says he hopes stores will soon have more whole-grain breads, low-fat dairy products, meat, eggs, and nutritious snacks in stock.
He says higher-quality food will improve the health and economic vitality of the neighborhoods.
