State disability paycheck deductions now cover a portion of the salaries of workers who take leave to care for an ailing parent, spouse or child for up to six weeks.
“This bill would add siblings, grandparents, grandchildren and parents-in-law,” says Sharon Terman with the Legal Aid Society-Employment Law Center, which co-sponsored the bill. “We think it’s a win-win for workers, families and employers.”
Terman says it would reduce financial hardship and improve employee morale, which would also help business
But small business owner and Democratic Assemblymember Jim Frazier say the bill could affect his bottom line.
“There is an impact. It will impact my ability to make money because that employee is gone,” says Frazier.
The bill now heads to the Assembly Appropriations committee.
