Making The Case For And Against Renovating The Community Theatre, Convention Center

Sacramento business leaders are clashing over their visions for renovating Sacramento's Convention Center. Expansion plans are at the center of the debate. Right now the building covers 384-thousand square feet.

The city's tourism group Visit Sacramento wants to expand it by another 120,000 square feet.

"Sacramento has just over 2,000 downtown hotel rooms," says Mike Testa, with Visit Sacramento. "So part of the problem for us is, we can go after bigger pieces of business and put them in our bigger convention center, but there is nowhere for folks to stay."

But some business groups say that convention and leisure should be the next major industry in Sacramento. They want the convention center to be at least a million square feet.

"This industry is changing a lot," says Barry Broome, with the Greater Sacramento Area Economic Council. "Fifty-six percent of the conventions in California are now done in a hotel. So when we are looking at this space, if we have a hotel shortage you know, should there be a shift in the relationship of this space if now hotels are hosting these conventions.

A bigger expansion would also require a new financing plan. Under the current proposal, the budget is 200 million dollars. The Sacramento City Council was supposed to vote on a plan for the Convention Center next week, but that vote has been delayed.
