Bagpipes played in the California Senate to honor state Senator Sharon Runner, who died last month at the age of 62.
Both houses of the state Legislature commemorated the Republican Senator Monday.
Republican Assemblyman Tom Lackey called Runner the most profound influence in his political life.
"She was very fearless, very strong, but also very compassionate," Lackey said. "She was also an effective mother, spouse and personal friend."
Runner served six terms in the state Assembly and two terms in the state Senate.
In 2006, she was an author of the voter-approved initiative that increased sentences for first-time child sex offenders. She died July 14th of respiratory complications.
