Update 10:57 a.m.:
Update 6:04 p.m.: Crews from the Sacramento Fire Department are battling a 3-alarm grass fire near Cal Expo on the American River Parkway Monday.
The blaze started at around 3:17 p.m. just south of Cal Expo, near an RV park.
Crews are having difficulty stopping the fire because of winds and nearby power transmission lines.
Chris Harvey, with Sacramento Fire Department, says firefighters are concentrating their efforts to areas near the high-voltage power lines along the levee.
"We had multiple spot fires downwind," says Harvey. "It was starting to be multiple locations and so we needed more personnel to come out and fight each separate fire."
The winds caused the fire to scatter, but the bike trail and levee is providing a break at some spots.
The cause of the fire is unknown. Last year, two people arrested for allegedly starting fires on the American River Parkway.
Some areas of the parkway are at greater risk of fire than others, says Harvey.
"We work with our partners in the American River Parkway to try and mitigate some of the fire fuels," says Harvey. "This year, they had mostly goats and sheep. There were some other training burns, but they were up in Metro Fire's district.
The fire shut down the parkway's north bike trail between mile 4 and 6.
