A quarantine has been declared in a portion of Tracy in San Joaquin County after the finding of a pest that can kill citrus trees.
The Asian Citrus Psyillid can spread a disease to citrus that makes the fruit inedible and eventually kills the tree.
Local and federal officials are setting traps and will do a visual survey of the area in a search for more of the winged insects which are about the size of a fruit fly.
He says, “Citrus plant material that’s entering into a nursery situation has to be treated prior to being moved into the quarantine area and then no citrus plants are supposed to leave the quarantine area, they’re supposed to stay there.”
Pelican says two other earlier quarantines in Lodi and Manteca are still in effect.
