The Bison Fire had been 30% contained but high winds and low humidity reduced that containment by half and pushed the flames across 3,000 acres to a total of 9,300. Mark Struble with the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center, says it’s burning in Pinion Pine that is a very sappy tree.
“That’s one reason they don’t make very good Christmas trees, is they can be kind and certainly when a wildfire hits it, it can create quite a fuel bed and a nice dark cloud,” said Struble.
Struble says hopes of containing the fire today have been lost. The fire moved northeast into the Slater Mine area and destroyed some old buildings. On-line photos indicate most of the structures in the area are abandoned mining equipment and run down buildings.
