(AP) - A California lawmaker who led a group of moderate Democrats in the state Legislature says he is resigning from the state Assembly to pursue another job.
Assemblyman Henry Perea said Tuesday he's resigning from his Fresno-area seat effective Dec. 31.
He says in a news release that he wants to pursue other career opportunities.
Perea's district is dominated by oil and agriculture interests. He led a group of legislative Democrats this year in opposing a proposed mandate to cut the state's oil consumption in half within 15 years.
The so-called "mod squad" prevailed and Gov. Jerry Brown agreed to remove the provision.
Two senators quit in 2013 to take lucrative lobbying positions - Democrat Michael Rubio for Chevron Corp. and Republican Bill Emmerson for the California Hospital Association.
