Stockton developers have seen construction fees increased steadily over the last 15 years.
In 2002 it cost $16,000 for a building permit on a 2,000 square-foot home...eight years later the cost jumped to $53,000.
Attorney Steve Herum representing the Building Industry Association told the Stockton City Council that reducing fees would revive the area's housing industry that has gone flat.
"The local community will benefit from the economic development and by creating family wage jobs, it's good for the city, it's good for people looking for jobs so they can support their families."
The council agreed to cut fees by more than $12,000 over three years for 1,000 single family homes and 500 multi-family units.
Herum says similar cuts in nearby cities including Manteca and Lodi have helped spur new housing development.
