A Roseville company is helping teachers from the Sultanate of Oman establish curriculum for science, physics and biology laboratories.
The Pasco Company is hosting about a dozen teachers from the Oman Ministry of Education this week to teach them how to incorporate the company's equipment into lesson plans.
Ahmed Bani Saad is a Science Laboratories Specialist with the ministry.
He says it's important to incorporate new technology like sensors into classroom curriculum.
"There are sensors everywhere," he says. "You have in your cell phone, there are sensors for acceleration that measures distance, sensor for camera, sensors for everything, I think."
Michael Bridge is a company vice president. He says there has been an increase in requests from teachers around the world for more technology and training.
"Communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity -- those are essential and most governments recognize that developing those competencies in their students is critical for their knowledge economies," he says.
Bani Saad says biology, physics and chemistry classes in Oman schools will use Pasco's equipment.
"In our laboratory, there are sensors for measuring the speed of objects during some experiments and curriculum," says Saad. "There are sensors for making titration during chemistry."
Bridge says more than 100 countries now use the company's products and training as their economies change.
"Many companies actually in fact recognize that as they move into post-resource-extraction economies, those become more and more important," says Bridge.
Teachers will spend four days in the U.S. conducting experiments. They will then spend two days as tourists in San Francisco.
