(AP) - Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson is seeking a restraining order against the city he leads to prevent the release of emails he sent during his tenure as an officer of the National Conference of Black Mayors.
Television station KCRA reports that a Los Angeles law firm representing Johnson, the conference, and the trustee overseeing the group's bankruptcy applied for the order in Sacramento County Superior Court on Wednesday.
KCRA says the move is in response to a weekly alternative newspaper's public records request for emails concerning Johnson's relationship with the National Conference of Black Mayors.
Johnson resigned from the financially struggling group in 2013 and then founded the rival African American Mayors Association.
His lawyer, Peter Haviland, says releasing some of the communications would violate attorney-client privilege.
A hearing on the matter is scheduled for Thursday.
