California lawmakers plowed through a pile of bills Tuesday - including measures that deal with tobacco use and the elections process.
The Senate approved a bill that would raise the age to purchase tobacco products – including cigarettes and chewing tobacco – from 18 to 21. It would also apply to electronic cigarettes if a second bill becomes law. That measure also passed the Senate Tuesday; it would extend cigarette regulations to vaping. So vaping would be illegal in schools, restaurants, hospitals, and so forth.
Over in the Assembly, lawmakers approved state-funded recounts in the tightest of elections; and automatic voter registration for Californians who obtain or renew their driver’s licenses.
The Assembly also passed a bill that would expand disability and maternity leave payments through California’s Paid Family Leave program from six months to 10 months.
All bills now move to the opposite chamber.
