Organizers of the third annual "Day of Giving" in Sacramento say they met nearly all of their goals.
Dennis Mangers is the board chair of the Sacramento Region Community Foundation.
"Sacramento had a chance to show just how generous and philanthropic it can be as we went over our goal of $5 million to $5.6 million -- over 37,000 gifts," says Mangers.
The foundation says it is still counting the number of people who donated, but the preliminary number is about 23-thousand. That's nearly twice the number of people who donated last year.
The 529 organizations that received donations exceeded the foundation's goal of 500.
Placer Land Trust, B Street Theatre, The First Tee of Greater Sacramento, Sierra Forever Families, and Capital Public Radio received the most donations.
Give Local America keeps track of the donations collected yesterday by communities nationwide. It says 187 communities took part in a "give local" fundraising effort and raised more than $50 million.
