This summer, the Crocker Art Museum’s “Jazz in the Courtyard” series is set to celebrate the history of African American music-makers and the influential artists that perpetuate its rich musical tradition.

One of these modern artists is Marcus Shelby, celebrated jazz bassist, composer, and educator from San Francisco. Currently regarded as one of the most prominent jazz and blues musicians in the Bay Area, Shelby will perform with his quartet. They are presenting original jazz compositions driven by the intensity of the African American historical narrative.

Shelby’s newly released musical project, Soul of the Movement, is an album highlighting the efforts of Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. This 12-part musical suite includes musical portrayals and reflections of events such as the firebombing of a Freedom Rider bus and the march on Washington, D.C.

Shelby’s compositions bring new life to African American history, and you have an opportunity to win a pair of tickets to hear Marcus Shelby and his quartet perform. Enter to win and come join Shelby and his quartet on August 21, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Crocker’s E. Kendall Davis Courtyard for a night of historically-charged jazz and blues performance.
