Prosecutor: Defendant Admitted To 40 Murders

(AP) Prosecutors in Alabama say a man charged with several murders in California has admitted killing 40 people.

A Lawrence County, Alabama prosecutor says 51-year-old Jose Manuel Martinez carried out the crimes while working as an enforcer for a drug cartel.

Martinez is awaiting trial on a murder charge in Alabama. He once lived in Central California wand is charged with nine murders in three counties.

He's also accused of kidnapping and murder for financial gain.

Prosecutors in California say the slayings happened over 30 years.
