Under the bill, the number of competitive Cal Grant awards would increase from the current 22,500 to 50,000.
Matthew La Rocque with the Institute for College Access and Success says there were 16 eligible applicants for every Cal Grant awarded last year.
“There are hundreds of thousands of eligible students who apply for these awards who meet the eligibility criteria, but they’re none the less turned down," says La Rocque.
No financial analysis has been done on the bill.
But supporters say 5,000 to 6,000 grants go unused each year. Under the bill, the number of awards could exceed 50,000 dollars.
The coverage would then be subtracted from the following year’s allotment. The bill now goes to the Assembly Appropriations Committee.
