K Street in Downtown Sacramento will soon be friendlier to bicyclists.
Lisa Martinez with the Downtown Sacramento Partnership says the organization has commissioned a local artist to create two bike racks that double as works of art for the area, "There's a lot of cyclists in Sacramento and with the new businesses they needed more capacity for the bike parking. That's the functional reason. The other part is we wanted to do something for the Kay District that let you know you've arrived in this special place."
Martinez says cyclists have been using whatever they could find to secure their bikes, "There's always a number of bikes parked on to spaces that aren't actually bike racks and so we want to give cyclists more opportunities to hitch up to something a little more stable, a little bit more secure. "
The racks are the latest in a continuing effort to revitalize the area. K Street was opened up to vehicle traffic in 2011, was renamed "The Kay" last year and -after the bike racks are installed- will be home to a new mural.
