Capitol Chat Gov. Jerry Brown released his
budget for California's 2013-2014 fiscal year this week. Capital
Public Radio's Capitol Bureau Chief Ben Adler joins us with reaction to the
budget's details and analysis. We'll also hear more about Gov.
Brown's proposed prison plan.
Kings' Move? Will the Sacramento Kings move
to Seattle? There's been a lot of talk and speculation that the
Maloofs are in negotiations to sell a majority stake in the team to
an investment group in Seattle, which would relocate the team to
that city. What's going on? We'll get the latest.
Human Trafficking It is estimated that nearly
27 million people are suffering today in some form of slavery,
making human trafficking one of the world's largest criminal
enterprises. Eighty percent of those trafficked across internal
borders are women and children and Sacramento is among the top five
cities in the United States experiencing an epidemic of child
trafficking. In response to these numbers, Jan. 11th has been
designated as National Human Trafficking Awareness Day by
the U.S. Senate. We'll talk with two people in the region - Chad
Salstrom, co-founder of Origin Coffee & Tea, a non-profit coffee
shop resolved to ending human sex trafficking in Rocklin; and Beth
Hassett, executive director of WEAVE,
a local crisis intervention service provider for survivors of
domestic violence and sexual assault - who are working to lower
those numbers and help people victimized by traffickers.

Coach Carter Educator and motivational
speaker, "Coach"
Ken Carter, famously revived a Bay Area high school basketball
team, pressing his players to focus on education and studies
instead of just basketball. His triumph at the school prompted
Paramount to produce the 2005 film "Coach Carter," in which Samuel
L. Jackson portrayed Carter. Coach Carter will be the keynote
speaker at the 14th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Dinner this
Saturday at the Sacramento Convention Center. We'll talk with Coach
Carter about his work and we'll hear from Dorothy Enomoto, who
hosts the dinner and was a school friend of Dr. King.
Pomegranate A stint living and working in
France and London, a childhood spent with jingles and Michael
Jackson and winning awards in New York's Broadway scene - these are
the backgrounds of Gavin Canaan, Adam Twain and Michael Creason,
who make up the hard-to-label band Pomegranate. Their latest album is Ahead and
Behind, which has been described as landing somewhere in the
territory where "the moodier side of the Pixies meets Dinosaur Jr."
The band performs this Friday at Bows and Arrows in Sacramento and
we'll hear them live in our studios today.
