Insight: California Insurance Rates / Preventable Cancers / Travelling the Ganges / Kushman by the Bottle

California Insurance California is expected to be hit hard by insurance companies, many of which are raising their rates by the double digits.  According to California insurance commissioner Dave Jones http://www.insurance.ca.gov/0500-about-us/0200-commissioner/, some insurance companies could raise rates as much as they can before Obama's health care reform is enacted.  Rate filings on the California Department of Insurance website http://www.insurance.ca.gov/ show 15 filings that affect either individuals or small employers over the first four months of 2013.  They include two rate cuts by Anthem Blue Cross and 13 hikes by a variety of plans that also include Blue Shield of California, Health Net, Aetna, and Kaiser Permanente.  Jones is is taking insurance companies to task for raising their rates and he talks to us about his call for new regulatory authority over insurance company rate increases,

HPV Cancers As cancer rates overall continue to decline, human papillomavirus (HPV) related cancers of the esophagus and anus are on the rise, according to the Annual report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer. At the same time, vaccination rates, which could stem the number of cancer deaths, still remain low.  The report, published on Monday, January 8th, in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute concludes that the spike in cancers thought to be caused by HPS underscores the need for additional prevention efforts, including immunization. Two UC Davis doctors join us do discuss pediatric and adult risks for the virus.

Go Ganges! Television producers and adventure travelers JJ Kelley and Josh Thomas test their limits on an adventure down India's sacred river, the Ganges.  Together, they journey from the source glacier of the river in the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal, where it empties into the Indian Ocean.  They do it rather conventionally--traveling on foot, cycle-rickshaw, rowboat, and just about anything else that moves.  They turn their adventure into a documentary, which is showing on Saturday morning at the Wild & Scenic Film Festival in Nevada City.  JJ joins us by phone to give us a preview of the adventure.

Kushman by the Bottle Capital Public Radio's resident wine expert (and occasional guest host) Rick Kushman joins us for the first 2013 installment of Kushman by the Bottle.  He offers advice on what's going on in the wine world in regards to the outlook on wine prices, new clusters of local tasting rooms, and what he calls "old school wine pretentiousness" and "hipsterism wine pretentiousness."  Curious yet?  You can expect to hear Rick's wine recommendations as well.
