Legislative Session Ends on High Note

Democratic Senate leader Darrell Steinberg points to changes in the state's pension and workers' compensation systems as highlights of the session.

Steinberg:"What we produced this year for the state of California I think has been substantial."

Republican Senator Ted Gaines agrees, but criticized the process of passing the legislation at the last minute. Lawmakers didn't finish their work until early Saturday morning.

Gaines: "I think the public has a right to know when a piece of legislation moves forward and we're passing legislation in the dark of night, you've really got to be careful."

Another last minute bill that passed would charge a 1 percent tax on lumber to pay for regulating the timber industry.

And lawmakers killed a bill that would have closed a tax exemption on out-of-state businesses to pay for middle class college scholarships.
