Paint, cleaners, and other hazardous materials continue to go
into our landfills. But Yolo County is trying to keep those
things out.
Yolo County's Integrated Waste Management department has a free program for senior citizens and the disabled -a free Saturday pickup service of hazardous materials like old medication, syringes, batteries and paint.
Pamela Hedrick with Yolo County says they're able to recycle some of the stuff, "If people are giving things like paint or old cleaning supplies that are still in the original containers half-full or fuller, they go into our re-use facility."
The materials that are kept are available to the public for free. Hedrick says drivers currently make two pickups a week from the disabled and seniors. The county's goal this year is to make five times that many of collections.
