Specially equipped California Air National Guard C-130 air tankers had to stop fighting the fires in Colorado because of the order. They were grounded when a C-130 crashed in South Dakota on Sunday.
The type of plane that crashed uses a special Modular Airborne Firefighting System.
California has had two such planes fighting fires in Colorado since last week.
The special equipment is responsible for releasing water or slurry on a fire. The machines come in handy when crews who normally perform that task are in short supply.
The plane that crashed had been dropping retardant on the Whitedraw Fire in southwestern South Dakota.
Investigators have not determined a cause of the crash.
